Change Projects: Don't Overlook These 8 Key Factors
Implementing successful organizational change can be tricky business. The stats show most major corporate change programs fail to meet their goals (up to 70%). So why do these initiatives so often come up short? From our experience, it usually boils down to some critical mistakes made in managing the change process.
Let's take a look at 8 key factors that tend to get overlooked or underemphasized when companies undergo major transformations.
- Communication - You can (almost) never communicate too much during periods of change. Updates should come early and often from leadership. Make sure there are open channels for people to ask questions and provide feedback. Change is unsettling, so constant interaction helps calm nerves and ensure understanding.
- Middle Management - Frontline and middle managers play a huge role in ensuring change is executed seamlessly. But we don’t always bring them into the process early enough or give them the training needed to lead effectively. This oversight causes breakdowns.
- Employee Mindsets - Those impacted by the coming changes need to be heard and engaged. When people feel their perspectives are ignored, negativity and resistance inevitably creep in. Get employees onboard and they become your change champions.
- Training - This one is obvious in hindsight, but we often neglect to properly train employees on new systems and processes resulting from the transformation. You cannot expect changed behaviors without first enabling skills development.
- Planning - Every major change program needs a detailed roadmap and timeline. When things feel unstructured and chaotic, anxiety mounts. A clear plan calms emotions and sets new expectations.
- Culture Alignment - Big changes stand the best chance of success if aligned with existing cultural values as much as possible. Imposing dramatic shifts in norms and behaviors tends to fail. Make sure cultural evolution is gradual.
- Tracking Progress - Ways to quantify whether the change program is moving the needle on targets and goals need to be baked in. Without constant measurement, you’re operating blind. Use data to course correct.
- Motivation and Reinforcement - People need encouragement and support when adopting new behaviors. Reward progress, celebrate small wins, and reinforce the change through ongoing incentives.
Avoiding overlooking key factors like these can profoundly improve the outcome of your change efforts. If you need help building, analyzing, or implementing a change plan, reach out to us! We will be happy to get you on the path to success.
